How To Get Started Without Getting Overwhelmed

Interior Design Tips For Your Home
Also known as: how to get started without getting overwhelmed

Whether you’ve just moved in or you’ve finally clocked that something in your space isn’t quite working, it’s easy to feel stuck when it comes to making changes. So if you’re unsure where to begin, here are a few practical tips to help you get going.

1. Pause before jumping in
There’s always a pull to get stuck in straight away. But if you can, give yourself time to live in the space first.
If you’ve just moved, even a couple of weeks will help you get a sense of how the light moves, which rooms you naturally gravitate towards and where the day-to-day friction points are.
If you’ve been there a while, stop and take stock of what’s not working. Make a running note on your phone. Maybe there’s nowhere to dump muddy boots. Or your kitchen grinds to a halt every time you have people over. These little irritations are gold dust. They give you a clear brief and help you avoid spending time or money on things that won’t actually make your life easier.

2. Get clear on your priorities
You don’t have to fix the whole house in one go. Start with the things that will have the biggest impact on your daily life. That might mean sorting the bedroom so you can get proper rest. Or streamlining the kitchen for chaotic school mornings. Or carving out a quiet corner where you can actually hear yourself think. Also bear in mind which spaces are the most disruptive to work on. We always try to time kitchens, bathrooms and hallways for when clients can be away, even if only for part of the job.

3. Let go of what no longer fits
Not everything from your previous home or life stage will make sense now, and that’s fine. If something feels awkward, looks out of place or just doesn’t work with how you live, it’s okay to let it go. Reworking your home is a chance to make space for things that serve you now rather than clinging to stuff out of habit or obligation.

4. Gather your thoughts
Before you rush into buying anything, pull your ideas together visually. Start a Pinterest board, save images on Instagram or tear out a few pages from a magazine. Don’t worry about following trends. Focus on how you want the space to feel. Calm, warm, open, inviting. That kind of brief will make your decisions feel more natural and less like guesswork.

5. Nail the basics first
Start with the pieces that make the biggest difference to how you live. Good storage, a decent bed, a comfortable sofa, a solid dining table and proper lighting. Get those right and you’ll already feel the change. The extras, like cushions, art and finishing touches, can come later. Layer those in slowly over time.

6. Take the pressure off
Making changes to your home is a big deal, and it doesn’t all need to happen in a matter of weeks.
If you’ve just moved in, unpack what you need but resist the urge to rush everything. If your space needs to evolve with your lifestyle, give yourself the breathing room to figure out what that really looks like.
Your home doesn’t need to be perfect straight away. It’ll come together in stages, and that’s how it should be.
