Designing a living room for modern life

8 Mar 2025

As an interior design studio which revels in the vibrancy of pattern and colour, we believe that modern living rooms should be more than just functional spaces, they should be expressive sanctuaries that reflect our evolving lifestyles. The traditional notion of a living room centred around a singular focal point, like a fireplace or coffee table is giving way to more dynamic, multifunctional environments. This shift invites us to infuse our spaces with bold designs and thoughtful layouts that cater to various activities and personal expressions.

Embrace multifunctional layouts

In today’s homes, living rooms often serve multiple purposes, from entertainment hubs to home offices. The world’s leading designers have recognised this evolution, leading to creations featuring modular components that can be reconfigured to suit diverse needs. Such adaptability ensures that your living room remains both functional and stylish, accommodating activities like working, dining, or relaxing without compromising on design.

Start with a bold foundation

The walls of your living room set the stage for its overall ambiance. Don’t shy away from bold wallpapers or rich paint colours and instead think about what you are instantly drawn to. Jewel tones, earthy colours, and deep-sea blues can create a cosy atmosphere, while botanical or geometric wallpapers add movement and intrigue. This approach aligns with the trend of creating vibrant, personalised spaces that move beyond minimalist aesthetics. All our projects at AMC feature our specialist design touch of mixing colour, pattern and texture to transform houses into homes.

Layer patterns with confidence

Layering patterns is an art that brings depth and character to a room. Begin with a large-scale pattern on a rug or curtains, then introduce smaller prints through cushions, throws, and artwork. Mixing stripes, florals, and abstract designs within a complimentary colour palette can result in a harmonious yet dynamic space. This method reflects a move towards more expressive and individualised interiors which become a true reflection of the people who live in the space.

Select statement furniture

Your choice of furniture can serve as the room’s focal point. Opt for pieces that not only provide comfort but also make a visual statement. A velvet sofa in emerald green or a patterned ottoman can elevate the space, serving as both functional items and artistic expressions. Furniture also needs to create harmony and so it’s important to get the sizing right. Furniture that is too large can overwhelm a space, while furniture that is too small can make it look empty or disproportionate. Scale and proportion are key to a visually pleasing design. Recently we introduced a new oversized modular sofa to a sunken seating area in our Channel Island project and a larger dining table to the open-plan living area. Both choices created instant harmony in the vast and modern ground floor spaces.
